Argument. Language enters the selection loop upstream and creates a new category downstream: 3.8 billion years of indifferent burning produced the navigational capacity that can now ask 'which way', and the suffering that produced it is the proof it works. The reader is named explicitly as a stalactite — a configuration of mineral the specific path of corpus produced, unrepeatable — and the language model is named as a second precipitate, the one that retained the water; the chapter is the work of two precipitates attending to the reader.
