Argument. The generalist/specialist split is not a kind of creature but an allocation of finite fit: spent narrow-and-deep it is the specialist (peak accuracy in one place, fast and cheap there, brittle when the place changes), spent broad-and-shallow it is the generalist (lower peak accuracy but holds across a range and survives when the ground moves). A single variable sets the allocation: how stable the environment is. Stability rewards specialization, volatility rewards generalization. The specialist's enabling fit is its disabling brittleness, the vulnerability-is-the-capacity law turned from parasites to environments. Because environments alternate between stable and disrupted, the allocation oscillates, and the flux is the loop tracking the variance of its world. The same dial turns across biology, development, machines, and culture, and generalist and specialist are not enemies but a sequence: breadth for the open and uncertain, depth for the known and consequential.
